Europa Gay

Sofia

Bulgaria’s capital is one of Europe’s oldest cities. Founded as ancient Serdica, it has more than two millennia of history layered beneath its streets, and Roman ruins sit right beside the metro. The city’s landmark is the gold-domed Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. Nearby you’ll find the 4th-century Rotunda of St George and the UNESCO-listed Boyana Church with its medieval frescoes. Its tree-lined boulevards mix Ottoman, Soviet-era and modern architecture, and Vitosha Boulevard is the lively spine of cafés and shops. The best part is that Vitosha Mountain rises right at the city’s edge, so you can go hiking or skiing just half an hour from the centre. Add mineral springs, an easy day trip to Rila Monastery, and generous plates of shopska salad and banitsa with a glass of rakia, all at prices well below most European capitals.

The gay scene is small but well established for Eastern Europe. It has no gay district, and its venues are scattered across the city centre within easy reach of each other. Nightlife is driven more by parties than by neighbourhood. Club Asylum and VAULT are the main places for late-night dancing and drag shows, and smaller bars such as Tell Me are good for a relaxed drink. Venues open and close fairly often, so check social media before heading out. Sofia is generally safe in central areas, but Bulgaria is still socially conservative and doesn’t recognise same-sex partnerships, so many locals are discreet outside of queer spaces.

The highlight of the year is Sofia Pride in June. Held every year since 2008, it is the country’s largest LGBTQ+ event, both a celebration and a march for equal rights. It usually opens with a concert in the city centre before the parade sets off through central Sofia. Thousands take part each year, and support from local NGOs and many foreign embassies makes it a powerful moment of visibility in a city where the community is growing more confident every year.

12A Bratya Miladinovi Str, Sofia

VAULT – The Next Level is Sofia’s go-to party for big, glittering nights out. It is the latest chapter of a long-running local club project and is based at The Steps on Bratya Miladinovi Street. VAULT treats nightlife as a show, with full-on lighting, visuals and production, drag queens, go-go dancers and pop anthems played non-stop until sunrise. The crowd is mixed and ready to party, made up of locals and visitors alike. Every VAULT night has its own theme, from sports-inspired parties with dancers in matching gear and themed cocktails to drag spectacles and themed costume nights. The calendar also includes the official Pride opening and closing parties and Eurovision watch parties, which are always among the most popular nights of the year. In summer, VAULT heads to the Black Sea coast for its Summer Beach Fest, a weekend of beach parties, DJs and drag by the sea. Doors usually open around 23:30, entry is strictly 18+, and tickets for the bigger nights sell out fast, so book in advance on bilet.bg.

The Steps

Bratya Miladinovi St 12, Sofia

On Bratya Miladinovi Street in central Sofia, The Steps is much more than a bar. It is the city’s main LGBTQ+ community space. It is run as a social enterprise of the Single Step Foundation, which supports LGBTI young people and their families, and its profits are reinvested in the LGBTI community in Bulgaria. Every drink you order here helps. By day, The Steps is a relaxed bistro and coworking spot with food and drinks. Its event hall hosts exhibitions, film screenings, talks and meetings of local LGBTI groups, including trans and non-binary meetups. In the evenings and on weekends the mood shifts to entertainment, with drag shows by local queer collectives and dance nights. The space is also known as the home of VAULT, one of Sofia’s best-known gay party brands. For first-time visitors, it’s the easiest and friendliest way into the city’s queer scene: a place to meet locals, find out what’s on, and start the night before moving on to the clubs.

Asylum

1 Hristo Belchev Str

Hidden in a passage off Hristo Belchev Street in the centre of Sofia, Club Asylum is the city’s most established dedicated gay club today. This LGBT-owned venue covers around 420 m², with a main dance floor plus a separate dark room and playroom. The crowd is a friendly mix of locals and visitors, and the club’s ethos is all about inclusivity, discretion and genuine connection. Asylum is the home of Gay Parties Sofia, so there’s something on almost every weekend. The monthly calendar includes the signature Gay Party, Couples Night and LesBi Party, along with underwear and fetish nights, drag shows and queer-goth events. DYKES nights are dedicated to the FLINTA* community. Parties usually run on Fridays and Saturdays from 22:00 until around 6 am, and Thursdays bring an earlier, more relaxed evening from 19:00. Expect DJs, techno and plenty of dancing until sunrise. The theme changes every night, so check the schedule at gayparties.bg before you go.
